Standing Candles

Kathy pointed out that the little nub of wax on the bottom of the number candles would not hold them up.  So I was given the task to make them stand straight and tall.  I first thought tooth picks.  Then I thought drill holes in the bottom and wedging in wooden match sticks.

Then I came up with the idea of little nails.

The heated nail melted the wax as it went in and then quickly hardened.

Those candles never budged.

The Sidelines

I photographed soccer with Amy Schlemo and Dawn Bird on April 2, 2011.  It was fun to chat before the game, but when the players went onto the field I walked to the opposite side of the field so the sun would be at my back and the fans will be my backdrop.

February 12, 2011 – Gnawed Bones

I was taking photos among bamboo and cedar trees behind the Scullville Church in EHT, NJ.  At the base of a cedar I saw this bone.

.

Look closely and you can see teeth marks from some animal scraping off bits of bone with it’s teeth.  I put my camera on the ground to show the hollow inside.

.

Here is a photo comparing today’s bone find and one that I found years ago.  Almost all teeth marks are from the edge and in a uniform distance.  I wonder if this is the bite size of the animal.  You can see that this distance from edge to end of gnaw mark is different.  Does this indicate the bites were made by different animals?

.

Shot from above to show the hallow inside of the bone.

February 12 – Symmetry

I took photos and wrote about the former mill at Lakes Creek on Bevis Mill Road. Where English Creek crosses Zion Road the sluices back up the water into a beautiful pond. My photo Guarding Lions taken February 1 shows the lake covered with ice and snow. To take today’s picture I approached the pond from Asbury Methodist Church, EHT, NJ. Looking on Google Maps you can see a very large pond for our area.

.

.

.
Small cedar trees are growing from the pond, their roots hanging on to small islands. I wonder how these are formed.
.

.
Most intriguing was the reflections in the perfectly still water.
.

.

I published a small web photo album of the church and pond

January 31 Bevis Mill

.
This is the location of a carding mill built by in 1835. You can see the section of Lakes Creek that used to be damned up to form a pond in the photo below.
.

.
The water power of the pond was harnessed to power the mill equipment. This photo shows the shoot that funnels the water into the mechanism which operated the mill equipment. On the right of the photo are the remains of the concrete damn.
.

.
If you look closely you will see a rectangle of water. If the damn was still intact and the water high water would flow down this shaft and be forced through a pipe on the other side.
.

.
The mill equipment would be attached to the pipe and the pressure of the water would turn the mill equipment. Water power has been used or centuries. It was used here at Bevis Mill in the 1800′s. You can see a working water powered saw mill at Batsto Village.

January 28 – Snowy Morning

.
My mother and I had enjoyable morning taking snow photos on Jefferys Landing Road. When we got back we cleared the snow from the back of her house.

January 26 – English Creek Bridge

It was an over cast morning with ice on the meadows and creek.

Signs on or near the bridge indicating that it was built in 1914.

The top left photo shows the path leading from the farm house to the dock. It has been here my entire life and I can remember when the dock was in good repair. The bottom left photo shows the path leading to the dock. The photo to the right shows a large square stone step that marks the end of the path. I would imagine that planking connected this step to the dock.

January 15 – Hospital Visitors

Kathy is in the hospital for gall bladder surgery. A visit from family really cheered her up. Dan is explaining photos from our recent visit to Harvard Law School.

January 2 – More snow photos

Here are a few additional photos of first the snow storm of 2010. While I recently posted the photo of my mother and I on the snow plow I couldn’t resist putting it into this collage.

2009 Presidential Inauguration

09inaugural1z2

Saturday we took Dan to Washington DC for the 2009 Presidential Inaugural.  He went with The National Society of Collegiate Scholars.  He will be involved in an extensive program of events and speakers over the next few days.  I have put up a small photo album of his hotel check in.

09 Ski Trip – Camelback

09camel01z

Wednesday brought us freezing rain.  Everything was covered with a sheet of ice and all of the ski mountains were closed.  The boys spent most of the day around the lodge swimming, bowling, playing games and exploring.  When we went to bed the prediction was for snow over night so everyone was hopeful.  When I peeked out on Thursday morning there was about an inch of snow so we went to Camelback.  I spent a good part of the morning positioned at a jump waiting to take action shots.  The boys enjoyed skiing in the snow.  When Jason yelled down from the lift, “Gramps how do you like this snow? I replied I would rather have less snow and more sun.”  Jason was thinking of skiing and I was thinking of taking their photos.  But whatever your perspective we all had a great day and a wonderful week.  Take a look at the complete photo album.

2009 Ski Trip – Elk Mountain

09elk01z

Yesterday we road about an hour north to Elk Mountain.  Dan, Derek, Joe and Jason got in a lot of runs since there was absolutely no waiting at the lift.  As we pulled out of the resort, the snow started. The boys napped on the way home, exhausted from a good day on the slopes.  After showers we headed out for dinner at Shenanigans.  When we came out after a great meal, the snow had turned to freezing rain.  Today’s plans for another day of skiing at Camelback were dashed when we woke up to a sheet of ice on the ground and more rain.  Since the boys couldn’t get right out on the slopes, Kathy took the opportunity to make bacon egg and cheese sandwiches for breakfast.  I’ve updated the web album with photos of night skiing at Big Boulder and yesterday’s Elk Mountain.

2009 Ski Trip – Night Run

09nightski01

We went to Big Boulder Monday evening.  It was my first time at a ski resort so I wasn’t sure where  I could stand, whom I could take photos of or where to get the action shots.  We finally did find a good location, but under the lights was a photographic challenge.  Tomorrow we are driving about an hour north to Elk Mountain.  I’m looking forward to a lot of great picture opportunities.

2009 Ski Trip – Unpacking

09ski01_001z

We will be spending the week at Willowbrook at Split Rock Resort near Lake Harmony.  We checked in at the Galleria, a hubbub of activity.  This is the central location for the pool, game room, movie theater, shopping, all the activities.  We were relieved that our room assignment is Building #4 down by the golf course.  It is modern, spacious and very quiet.  The boys agreed that MomMom should be in the side with the bigger kitchen.  After unpacking we had white chilly, as taught to Kathy by our brother Jeff Kindler in Yuma, AZ.  After bagels for breakfast the boys mapped a course to Camelback for today’s skiing.  MomMom setup the crock pot with meatballs and plenty of sauce for an evening meal of meatball subs.

I will post trip updates often.  We are looking forward to a great time.  See Today’s photo web album.

Relaxing in California

2007tripwest368z

In 2007 Kathy and I visited the Kindlers, our family in Yuma.  On a day trip we went over to Juian, CA.  It was a lovely little town to wander around in.  This photo shows Jeff and Lily sitting in front of an antique shop enjoying the sun.  Take a look at the web photo album.

A Post Card

These two photo were taken at Sunday School a few weeks ago.  I wanted to display then together and turned to FotoFusion for my answer. I generaly us it to make collages, but this time I went into the scrap booking section and found this frame and dropped in their photos.

A Family Gathers at Christmas

08christmaseve

After the Christmas Eve service the Dellas family assembled in the front for a family photo.  I could resist going up and taking one of my own.  The small ones are looking at someone interesting off to my left and Nicholas is preoccupied with his candles.  But when I looked back at the previous photo I saw that he was proudly displaying them.

The Perfect Christmas Angel

08christmasprg068

“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior which is Christ the Lord.”  Luke 2: 10-11

In this photo from Sunday’s Christmas program Megan portrays the angel keeping watch over baby Jesus.  When I look at Dawn and Cory representing Mary and Joseph I think of beauty and sincerity on one hand and strength and commitment on the other.  Be sincere and commit yourself to Jesus.

I hope angels are smiling down on you.

A Christmas Card

08svbc01

Yesterday was our church’s Christmas program.  It is a pleasure to see these small children sharing the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  In this era of sweatshirts and baggy pants it is a joy to see children dressed in their Christmas best.  Kristina likes to let her theatrical side go at the program.  Look at the web album to see these cherubs in action.

A night at the theater

08snoopywt

Atlantic Christian School combined A Charlie Brown Christmas with their Christmas concert and produced a evening of entertainment.  The hit of the show was Snoopy portrayed by Andrew Lavery.  Andy, as he is know in thespian circles, made the Snoopy costume come alive with expression.  A well deserved round of applause for his performance.  Take a look at Snoopy’s web photo album.  And don’t forget to look at last year’s production of Fibber McGee and Molly.
